Http vs https (How safe is http vs https on your device)

Can you please explain why the device needs to connect to http vs https? I see that all of your faqs are set with https. I want to use the device, but hesitant due to having to log into an http site, data enter my wifi information as opposed to dialing into an https site. Can you please educate me on this, thank you.

Hello,

In this specific device setup scenario, using HTTP is completely safe. Here’s why:

  1. Your phone or computer is connected directly to the Mini Dock in a point-to-point manner—like having a private conversation behind closed doors. It’s not connected to the public internet at all during this process.

  2. This “private room” uses a local IP address (192.168.x.x). Since browsers worldwide don’t issue HTTPS certificates for bare IP addresses, it’s technically impossible to enable HTTPS directly in this step. This is a common limitation across the industry.

To put it simply:

  • Regular web browsing (HTTPS) is like talking in a public square—encryption is necessary to prevent eavesdropping.

  • Device setup (HTTP) is more like passing a note inside a small meeting room that only stays open for 3 minutes. There’s no one else inside, and the note only contains your Wi-Fi name and password.

The “Not Secure” warning from the browser is just a standard reminder for any non-HTTPS page. It doesn’t know you’re actually inside that temporary, isolated setup environment.

So feel free to enter your Wi-Fi info with confidence. Once the setup is complete, the device will automatically turn off its temporary hotspot, and your connection will return to the safety of HTTPS.
